Dr. Who season 6 finally gets good (Spoilers ahoy)

I’ve been waiting to blog about Dr. Who season 6. But, so far the season has been mediocre (at best). The opening two-parter was decent, but the next few episodes just never interested me. Then we finally come to “A Good Man Goes to War” and the season explodes into greatness. Here we get the Doctor as a legend and the origin of River Song. What’s not to love? So, let’s see what happened and if you haven’t seen the episode yet, go watch it and come back.

At the end of “The Almost People”, we find that Amy had been a doppleganger and then the Doctor makes her disappear. Then we cut to Amy in a small white room and a woman with an eye patch slides back a door in the ceiling and tells her to push. We then start this episode with several old allies of the doctor finding a Tardis and realizing that their old debts are being collected. When Rory tries to get River to join, she looks a little scared and says that she can’t go until the battle is over because this battle is when he finds out who she is. The beginning of the episode is amazing. We get to see the how others view the Doctor.

Then we have the battle as only the Doctor could do it. Then, after the battle, the baby disappears out of Amy’s hands (I love how they had it disappear into a puddle of milk). Then River appears. The Doctor comes over mad at her that she didn’t come sooner. River points out that a doctor is supposed to be a healer and the rest of the universe sees him as the mightiest warrior every. She asks him if this is what he wants. Then, River makes it clear to the Doctor (but not Rory and Amy) who she is. The Doctor goes running, excitedly to the Tardis and then River patiently explains to Rory and Amy that she is their daughter. We cut to the ending where we find out that we have to wait several weeks for the next episode “Let’s Kill Hitler”.

This episode did a wonderful job showing the Doctor as a Legend. Moffat has done a great job building up the Doctor’s reputation and then uses River to quickly and efficiently point out to the Doctor, that it might not be growing in the way he wants. The way that we learned how people fear the Doctor during the episode made it clear why people view him as the fiercest warrior in the universe. This helped make River’s little speech even more cutting. In an mediocre season, this was easily the best episode so far. Go find it and watch it if you haven’t yet.

  1. I felt the same way you did about the start of the season: OK, but certainly not great.

and then this final episode knocked my head off, having been hinted at stuff from this season and going back I think, to like season four! and Rory finally got to be a bad-ass!!
