Continuum Season 2 so far

The first season of Continuum was one of my favorite science fiction TV shows of the last few years. It melded a time travel story with a police procedural that didn’t lean too heavily on the bad guy of the week storyline. And the creators picked a wonderful way to end season 1 to shake things up for season 2. Having said that, I wasn’t thrilled with the first few episodes of season 2. It seemed like it was too disjointed and not really that interesting. That all changed with the latest episode, “Second Skin”. I finally feel like I’m in with season 2 and am excited for future episodes. Let’s see what’s happened so far. *SPOILERS AHEAD* for season 1 and the first few episodes of season 2.

After the end of season 1, where Alec discovered a message from the future to himself, he no longer is as excited to help Kiera. When Alec’s future self warned Alec about letting the future Kiera came from happen, it set Alec up against Kiera (who obviously wants to get back to her future where her family is). This season Alec has moved out from the farm (after the liber8 inspired shootout) and isn’t as eager to work with Kiera. He’s wandering around worried about doing anything that could lead to the future he’s warned himself against. Kiera is also confused about what to do. The more she does in the past, the more she will change the future and make it so she can never get back to her family. Adding in that she feels that she can do more without official police cover (although she doesn’t know who Batman is) and is under the watchful eye of Agent Gardiner who suspects something, but doesn’t know what. Meanwhile liber8 has split into two factions after the death of Kagame and they don’t like each other. And they want to protect Alec’s brother Julian who might be the future mentor of the group.

So there’s a lot going on, but not all of it was hanging together, until episode 4. In this episode, Kiera finds out that one of her old partners from the future, Elena, came back to 1975. Since she didn’t have an Alec to talk to, she put away her suit, turned off her brain implant and went native. Elena’s in the hospital, possibly for good, and her son sold her supersuit at a garage sale without knowing what it was. A woman bought it for her boyfriend as the base for a costume wedding. When he realizes what the suit can do, he starts getting superhero ideas in his head. Alec and Kiera need to get the suit back before liber8 gets it. And Kiera is viewing firsthand an alternate future for herself. One where she settles down in the present and forgets about getting back to the future. So, we’ve now setup both Alec and Kiera with questions about what the correct future for them is. And what should they do in the present to get to the future they want.

Overall, season 2 hasn’t been as strong as season 1 so far, but I have hopes, based on episode 4, that it is getting better. I look forward to the rest of the season.
