Dr. Who – Eleventh Doctor

The new Dr. Who series with the Eleventh Doctor started in the UK on two weeks ago. It’s finally appearing on BBC America now. Never having watched Dr. Who before (Hi. My name is Mark and I’m a science fiction fan who’s never seen a Dr. Who episode), I thought this might be a good place to start with a new entry point. So, how is it?

The new Dr. shows up in young Amelia’s backyard with his TARDIS not working too well. After Amelia cooks the Dr. a bunch of food until he is able to eat something, the Dr. tells Amelia he has to get it stable and he’ll be back in 5 minutes. He shows up 12 years later and Amelia (now Amy) is a kiss-a-gram worker. She dresses in different costumes and goes to parties to kiss someone. Amelia was waiting for years for the Dr.  and has been in and out of psychiatric care for years due to her belief that he’ll be back.

When he finally returns, he has to earn back the trust of Amelia and rescue Earth from Prisoner Zero and the aliens who will destroy the planet. With decent special effects and a fun, action-packed script, Dr Who is a great ride. Amelia is wonderful as a young woman who has been waiting for the years for him to come back and is willing to follow him along because she’s into whatever he’s up for.

Not having seen Dr. Who before, I was impressed and will be watching more going forward. I highly recommend it for all viewers.
