The IT Crowd

The IT Crowd is a series from BBC which is currently being shown on IFC in the US. It’s about a small three person IT Department at an unnamed company who are completely overlooked and unappreciated. It’s a success in an topic of TV programming that usually fails (anyone remember the Dilbert series or Dweebs). The fact that the creators were able to make a funny and sucessful show about an IT department is reason enough to watch.

Roy, Moss (Maurice) and Jen are the IT department. Roy is a slacker who avoids doing anything and answers the phone with “Have you tried turning it off and turning it back on?”. Moss is the socially inept genius who could actually answer questions and fix problems if he knew how to communicate with anyone. Jen is the manager who got the job by lying about her computer skills. There are a few other characters including Denholm (the founder) who doesn’t know anything about computers and is content to ignore the IT team. Richmond used to be the up and coming superstar until he got into goth music a little too much. Now Richmond is confined to the server room.

The plots usually only barely revolve around actual computer issues (besides Denholm hating the IT department) and focus on the main characters who happen to be in the IT department. It’s a truly funny show going on it’s fourth season (although each season only has 6 episodes) and is well worth your time. Recommended.
