Dr. Who season finale

And we have the finale of Dr. Who, the first season with the 11th Dr. and my first season watching Dr. Who. Without any other Dr. Who to compare it to, I have to say that Dr. Who is now my favorite ongoing science fiction series. I love what Steven Moffat has done and I love the two main characters, Matt Smith as the Dr and Karen Gillan as Amy. Read on for more thoughts.

The season got off to a rousing start and then settled into a decent monster of the week series for the middle of the season. The Angels two parter and the Silurian two parter were well done, but the episodes around them were mediocre. I was almost ready to give up on the series, when we hit the last part of the season.

The Van Gogh episode was brilliant. It was everything a time traveling show should be. We meet a historical figure who is insane and use his insanity to great effect. Amy’s love for Van Gogh’s art ties in brilliantly and her heartbreaking realization that all her actions couldn’t save Van Gogh from himself was extremely well done.

The Lodger was a show that I wanted to see more of. It was a well-done fish out of water comedy and used Matt Smith’s soccer skills to great effect. Smith showed himself to be a wonderful comedic actor with his trying to help out Craig and Sophie and to fit in with 20th Century England.

And then we come to the finale two parter. We have all the Dr’s enemies coming at him, the destruction of the Universe, the death of Amy, the death of the Dr. and Rory staying by Amy’s side for 2000 years. And for all the death and destruction it was a small intimate show about a group of people (including River) who we have come to know and love through the season.

Now we only have to wait for the Christmas episode and the next season, which will feature a Neil Gaiman penned episode. I can’t wait for it to start.
