Grimm TV show review

The second of the fairy tale shows premiered last night with the pilot of Grimm. I would say that it was a boring Law and Order: Fairy Tales show, but that might make it sound too interesting. I would say that the lead actor (David Giuntoli) was boring, but that might make it seem like he showed some semblance of a personality on the show. It wasn’t worth the time and I’m pretty sure I’ll be skipping this show from now on. So, let’s see where the disaster started.

Nick Burkhardt(David Giuntoli) is a policeman and he and his partner Hank Griffin (Russell Hornsby) get called to the scene of a horrible murder. A young college aged girl was ripped literally to pieces in a park while she was out on a run. They figure out that this murder is tied to a missing young girl because they both wore red hoodies (Red Hood, get it…). Along the way he finds out from his Aunt that he comes from a long line of Grimms (people who can see the evil fairy tale folks) and learns more about his life from a redeemed Big Bad Wolf who’s going by the name Eddie.

If the show was focused more on Eddie (or had a lead actor who could…well act) this might be an interesting concept. But the way it is done now, the show is not even worth fast forwarding through. Nick starts seeing random people as monsters, but he doesn’t say a word or even look at them strangely. Nick’s sure he found the bad guy who keeps capturing red hooded girls, but he doesn’t seem interested when he’s interrogating him.

The show fails on a fairy tale level and on a police procedural level. It’s bad and should be recast (and rewritten) before being shown again (but it won’t be). If you’re interested in the basic concept, then I’d suggest you check out Alan Moore and Gene Ha’s comic book series Top 10. That book is about police in a city full of super heroes. It’s not the same exact concept. But it’s executed much, much better. So, change the channel after Chuck and skip Grimm from now on.
