Why I Stopped Watching Once Upon A Time

Back when it started, I reviewed ABC’s Once Upon a Time (review). I loved the mythology and the way the show just jumped into it. I enjoyed the interplay with Henry and his two moms: biological (Emma) and adoptive (Mayor Regina). And the intercutting of the fantasy/fairytale world and reality was interesting. But, recently I’ve given up on the show. Read on to find out why.

I have had many issues with the show. Namely:

  • The idiotic will they or won’t they Prince Charming/Snow White relationship. It’s 2012, we’re tired of couples being kept apart for idiotic reasons simply so the writers can keep them apart. The relationship started interestingly, but has devolved from there. There was absolutely no reason for David not to tell Kathryn about his feelings for Mary. David acted stupidly for no reason other than to put up a barrier.
  • Rumplestiltskin being Beast was silly and it doesn’t seem like the writers have a good handle on either Rumplestiltskin or Mr. Gold. His power waxes an wanes as the plot needs it
  • The Mayor should have been thrown out of office. I don’t care that she took money from the town to build a safer playground. She took money and spent it without any oversight. That is an impeachable offense regardless of why she spent it. But the townsfolk (who ARE under enchantment) just nod and go along with it. But Emma seems defeated as well. She should know that it was wrong, but doesn’t say anything. I won’t even ask how she was able to build a playground without anyone noticing. If no one can come or go from the town, then who worked on building the playground?
  • Lack of Henry. Henry is one of the more interesting characters in the show, but he’s been pushed off into the background. Regina keeps jumping back and forth over whether Henry is allowed to see Emma and it’s become annoying. Let Henry run the show, he’s the one who has the story to tell

So I’ve decided that I don’t care where the show is going. And if this is the direction the creators wish to take the show, then I’m leaving. It was a fun run and I wish Once Upon A Time the best in ratings, but it will be without me.
