Jaka’s Story by Dave Sim is my favorite Cerebus storyline. The multiple storylines are at once depressing, yet full of life and hope in a unforgiving climate. Previously Jaka has been a talisman of hope for Cerebus. He would see her or call for her when he was at his most desperate. And the timing was never right. So, after the events of Church and State, Cerebus saw all that he had worked for was destroyed, so he once again went to Jaka. And this is that story.

Church and State by Dave Sim

Church and State by Dave Sim is one book, split into two volumes because there is no way to fit the story into one volume. 66 issues of 20 pages each is a huge book. So Sim split it into two volumes, so that it could physically fit into books. For some Church and State is the highpoint of Cerebus (for me it’s Jaka’s Story) and contains everything that is good (and some bad) in Cerebus.

High Society by Dave Sim

High Society (Cerebus, Volume 2) by Dave Sim captures the first 25 of an amazing 125 issue run of comics (unfortunately it kept going for a mediocre to bad additional 150 issues).  This collection shows Sim starting to master his satire of politics, religion and comics that made Cerebus such a successful comic. In High Society, Sim starts pulling together the characters he had created in his first 25 issues and sets the stage for the rest of the series.
